Google Search Console Performance Report Impressions Spiking???

30 Mart 2026 saat 14:51

Analytics Google

Google Search Console's performance report may have some sort of bug or tracking issue. When you set some filters, you may see a huge spike in impressions start to show up in the report.

This may be similar to that num 100 spike we saw last year.

Brodie Clark was the first to post about this and wrote on X - he said, "there is something bizarre going on with Google Search Console data right now." He said this happens when he filters by the merchant listing filter, "using the 'merchant listings' search appearance filter, which has historically been independent of the influence of rank trackers (because of an impression being recorded only after a grid result is selected), is now a mess," he wrote.

Here is his screenshot:

Google Search Console Performance Report Impressions Spiking

Brodie added that this is across several large-scale eCommerce sites, "CTR data is no longer accurate for desktop, with there now being many queries appearing that are clearly related to tools, with significant increases in impressions from this past week in particular."

I am not sure how widespread this is, if it is limited to just the merchant listing filter or not...

Here is his post:

Heads-up: there is something bizarre going on with Google Search Console data right now.

Similar to the changes that came to light after the disabling of &num=100, impressions are again skyrocketing for specific surfaces on desktop.

For example, using the 'merchant listings''... pic.twitter.com/1uYaHiW7rh

Google Chimes In On Teen SEO Wants To Save Family Spain Vacation Rental

30 Mart 2026 saat 14:41

Spain Vacation Home

Google's John Mueller chimed in on Reddit when a teenager of a family vacation rental business said he was trying to save his family business through SEO after being burned by previous SEOs. In short, it seems the family has a vacation rental in Spain, and business is significantly down due to the loss of Google traffic.

The teenager asked a number of very specific SEO questions and added, "I am really lost and dont know how to proceed, and I CANT AFFORD to FAIL HERE."

The problem is, those specific SEO questions most likely won't make any difference. John Mueller from Google chimed in and wrote:

SEO is not magic:

Fundamentally, I think you need to keep in mind that any website with magical SEO won't necessarily rank highly in search results quickly, or necessarily drive clients to a business. If there were such a thing as making a website with perfect SEO that drives all the clients to one business, everyone here would be retired and living in ... idk, Spain :).

Competition is rough:

The online market for vacation rentals it hard, there's very strong competition from large aggregators, not just in terms of ranking, but also in terms of brand recognition. This is not to say that you can't get 40-50% more traffic from search (it really depends on the situation of the site), but this is (usually!) not a matter of just putting some meta-tags on a SEO optimized page that comes out of ChatGpt, targeting "house", "surroundings", "family vacation", etc. (Aside, keep in mind that many GenAI-made sites end up with JS frameworks that are traditionally more complex for SEO.)

And his advice:

My recommendation would be to find some more experienced folks who have time & interest in helping you check out the overall situation (what's the real headroom vs what has just changed in today's world? what's a realistic timeline - in the best/worst cases?), and help you to figure out a reasonable plan of attack. I don't think this is something that random reddit comments can solve (unless ... your site is actively blocking search engines, which it doesn't sound like it is). Ultimately, there's no guarantee that doing SEO well can solve this, so IMO it makes sense to go at this in a thoughtful & realistic way -- and perhaps, spend enough time working out alternative approaches.

You can scan through the thread and see John chime in more based on some advice around migrating stuff, which he thinks might be a bad idea.

These posts are always heartbreaking to read...

Google Search Live Goes Global

27 Mart 2026 saat 14:51

Google Audio Wave

Google announced Search Live has launched globally, for all languages and locations where AI Mode is available. Google said this is possible by its "new audio and voice model, Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, which delivers even more natural and intuitive conversations."

With this expansion, people in more than 200 countries & territories can have real-time conversations with Search in AI Mode, using both voice and camera.

Google also added, "The new model is also inherently multilingual, which means that people around the world can now speak with Search in their preferred language."

To go Live with Search, simply open the Google app on Android or iOS and tap the Live icon under the Search bar. From there, you can ask your question out loud to get a helpful audio response, then continue the conversation with follow-up questions or dive deeper with helpful web links.

Here is Rajan Patel from Google talking about it:

Search Live is going global! ð Starting today, people around the world can have conversations with Search using their voice and camera. And thanks to Gemini 3.1 Flash Live, it's faster, more natural, and fully multilingual.

Google March 2026 Core Update Is Rolling Out - First Core Update Of Year

27 Mart 2026 saat 14:24

Google Core Update

Google officially announced the rollout of the March 2026 core update early Friday morning at around 5:14 ET. This core update is expected to take up to 2 weeks to roll out. Google said this "is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites."

This is the first core update from Google in 2026, but we did recently have the March 2026 spam update earlier this week and then last month the February 2026 Discover core update.

Often these updates take longer than the time mentioned, so don't be surprised if it goes past two weeks.

Google March 2026 Core Update Quick Facts

Here are the most important things that we know right now in short form:

  • Name: Google March 2026 Broad Core Update
  • Launched: March 27, 2026 at around 5:14 am ET
  • Rollout: Will take up to two weeks to roll out
  • Targets: It looks at all types of content
  • Penalty: It is not a penalty, it promotes or rewards great web pages
  • Global: This is a global update impacting all regions, in all languages.
  • Impact: The normal core update - updating some of the "core systems". Google said this March update is a "regular update."
  • Discover: Core updates impact Google Discover and other features, also feature snippets and more.
  • Recover: If you were hit by this, then you will need to look at your content and see if you can do better with Google's core update advice.
  • Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to this algorithm but may not communicate those updates in the future. Maybe this is what we saw the past couple of weeks or all those unconfirmed Google updates.

Google March 2026 Core Update Details

Google said this update will take about three weeks to roll out and "is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites."

That is all we know right now but we will be tracking it.

Previous Broad Core Updates

Here is a list of the most recent core updates we've seen since Google started to confirm them. Previously, we nicknamed them Phantom updates or unconfirmed updates.

It was just announced, so I will add more to this as the day goes on. Here are some of the chatter from this morning and WebmasterWorld and on this site:

Looks to be a 'normal' core update with a 2 week completion date this time.

Google Ads PMax Audience Exclusions & New Reporting

27 Mart 2026 saat 14:21

Advertiser In Agency

Google announced several new steering updates for Google Ads Performance Max including first-party audience exclusions, budget reporting, full audience reporting and network segmentation in placement reporting.

Google calls this, "Precision steering for your target audience" with the new "First-party audience exclusions." This enables advertisers to exclude specific customer lists from your Performance Max campaigns, and target the right customers for your business goals. For example, this can help your budget focus on acquiring new customers rather than re-engaging those who have already converted.

Also, there are new insight reports available.

(1) Budget reporting: Access the budget report directly within Performance Max to project your end-of-month spend. Use this to understand how shifting your daily budget impacts your performance.

(2) Network segmentation in placement reporting: We are rolling out the ability to segment placement reports by network. This allows you to identify where your ads have served, giving you the visibility needed to help ensure brand safety. To make it easier to find the placement report, you can now access it in the 'When and where ads showed' tab.

(3) Full audience reporting: New upgrades provide detailed performance breakdowns for different audience demographics and segments, including age range and gender.

Google Merchant Center: Out-of-Stock Products Need Grayed Out Buy Button

26 Mart 2026 saat 14:21

Cart Computer Cloud

Google Merchant Center updated its landing page requirements to say that products that are out of stock, those pages must have a grayed out add to cart/buy button on that page.

The document says, "For 'out of stock' items, the 'Buy' button must be greyed out on your product landing page." Here is that section:

Make sure availability matches your product data, and that products can successfully be added to a cart and delivered to a customer. For example, if a product is out of stock on your landing page, then update the availability [availability] attribute in your product data to match. That way, users won't try to purchase a product that you don't have in stock. For 'out of stock' items, the 'Buy' button must be greyed out on your product landing page.

This change was spotted by Emmanuel Flossie who wrote, "Hiding the button is not allowed. Leaving it fully clickable is not allowed. What you need to do now is disable the button."

Google March 2026 Spam Update Unleashed (& Finished)

25 Mart 2026 saat 14:51

Google Spam Invaders

Google has released the March 2026 spam update on March 24, 2026 at around 3:20 pm ET. This update applies globally and to all languages and will take a few days (not weeks) to complete. And completed at 10:40 am ET today, March 25th.

Google wrote on LinkedIn, "Today we released the March 2026 spam update to Google Search."

Google added, "This is a normal spam update, and it will roll out for all languages and locations."

And the rollout will be quick, "The rollout may take a few days to complete," Google added.

March 2026 Google Spam Update Quick Facts

Here are the most important things that we know right now in short form:

  • Name: Google March 2026 Spam Update
  • Launched: March 24 ,2026, 2025 at about 3:20 pm ET
  • Rollout: Will take about a three days to fully rollout.
  • Completed: March 25, 2026 at 10:40am ET.
  • Targets: Sites violating some of the Google search spam policies.
  • Does Not Target: This update does not target link spam, it does not target the site reputation abuse policy and some other policies.
  • Penalty: It penalizes some of spam techniques that are against Google's spam policies.
  • Global: This is a global update impacting all regions and languages.
  • Impact: Google would not tell me what percentage of queries or searches were impacted by this update.
  • Recover: If you were hit by this, Google said you should review its spam policies to ensure they are complying with those.
  • Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to the spam update. It can take many months to recover, Google said.

The spam update page says:

While Google's automated systems to detect search spam are constantly operating, we occasionally make notable improvements to how they work. When we do, we refer to this as a spam update and share when they happen on our list of Google Search ranking updates.

For example, SpamBrain is our AI-based spam-prevention system. From time-to-time, we improve that system to make it better at spotting spam and to help ensure it catches new types of spam.

Sites that see a change after a spam update should review our spam policies to ensure they are complying with those. Sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all. Making changes may help a site improve if our automated systems learn over a period of months that the site complies with our spam policies.

In the case of a link spam update (an update that specifically deals with link spam), making changes might not generate an improvement. This is because when our systems remove the effects spammy links may have, any ranking benefit the links may have previously generated for your site is lost. Any potential ranking benefits generated by those links cannot be regained.

Google Adds Properties For Discussion Forum & QA Page Markup & Documents Robots Tags Outside HTML Head

25 Mart 2026 saat 14:41

Google Code

Google had made a few changes to its SEO developer help documentation. First it documented how Google Search handles and processes robots meta tags outside the HTML head. Second, it added more supported properties for Discussion Forum and QA Page markup.

(1) Google updated its robots meta tags documentation to add:

Note: Google Search doesn't enforce placement of meta robots in the HTML head and will respect robots meta tags in the body section of an HTML document as well.

Google said "behavior didn't change but was previously undocumented."

(2) Google also added new supported properties for Discussion Forum and QA Page markup.

I tried to do a compare of the old and new documents but the Wayback Machine was down at the time, but you can compare yourself.

Google said it made this update in order to provide "more clarity on comment thread structure to Google ingestion systems. This prevents misinterpretations in our handling of forum and Q&A content."
