Google March 2026 Core Update Is Rolling Out - First Core Update Of Year

27 Mart 2026 saat 14:24

Google Core Update

Google officially announced the rollout of the March 2026 core update early Friday morning at around 5:14 ET. This core update is expected to take up to 2 weeks to roll out. Google said this "is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites."

This is the first core update from Google in 2026, but we did recently have the March 2026 spam update earlier this week and then last month the February 2026 Discover core update.

Often these updates take longer than the time mentioned, so don't be surprised if it goes past two weeks.

Google March 2026 Core Update Quick Facts

Here are the most important things that we know right now in short form:

  • Name: Google March 2026 Broad Core Update
  • Launched: March 27, 2026 at around 5:14 am ET
  • Rollout: Will take up to two weeks to roll out
  • Targets: It looks at all types of content
  • Penalty: It is not a penalty, it promotes or rewards great web pages
  • Global: This is a global update impacting all regions, in all languages.
  • Impact: The normal core update - updating some of the "core systems". Google said this March update is a "regular update."
  • Discover: Core updates impact Google Discover and other features, also feature snippets and more.
  • Recover: If you were hit by this, then you will need to look at your content and see if you can do better with Google's core update advice.
  • Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to this algorithm but may not communicate those updates in the future. Maybe this is what we saw the past couple of weeks or all those unconfirmed Google updates.

Google March 2026 Core Update Details

Google said this update will take about three weeks to roll out and "is a regular update designed to better surface relevant, satisfying content for searchers from all types of sites."

That is all we know right now but we will be tracking it.

SEO Chatter on the March 2026 Core Update

It was just announced, so I will add more to this as the day goes on. Here are some of the chatter from this morning and WebmasterWorld and on this site:

They're really getting on my nerves. Guys, we've got a core update.

Yesterday I was right about Core Update. So it's here.

Looks to be a 'normal' core update with a 2 week completion date this time.

Whoa, here we go! I said this could be coming the other day! The March 2026 core update is now rolling out (on the heels of the Spam Update). https://t.co/pFaicyvLyj

'" Aleyda Solis ðï' (@aleyda) March 27, 2026

One is about spam, one is not about spam. If with some experience, you're not sure whether your site is spam or not, it's unfortunately probably spam. (That said, I can't imagine your sites are :-).)

Google March 2026 Spam Update Unleashed (& Finished)

25 Mart 2026 saat 14:51

Google Spam Invaders

Google has released the March 2026 spam update on March 24, 2026 at around 3:20 pm ET. This update applies globally and to all languages and will take a few days (not weeks) to complete. And completed at 10:40 am ET today, March 25th.

Google wrote on LinkedIn, "Today we released the March 2026 spam update to Google Search."

Google added, "This is a normal spam update, and it will roll out for all languages and locations."

And the rollout will be quick, "The rollout may take a few days to complete," Google added.

March 2026 Google Spam Update Quick Facts

Here are the most important things that we know right now in short form:

  • Name: Google March 2026 Spam Update
  • Launched: March 24 ,2026, 2025 at about 3:20 pm ET
  • Rollout: Will take about a three days to fully rollout.
  • Completed: March 25, 2026 at 10:40am ET.
  • Targets: Sites violating some of the Google search spam policies.
  • Does Not Target: This update does not target link spam, it does not target the site reputation abuse policy and some other policies.
  • Penalty: It penalizes some of spam techniques that are against Google's spam policies.
  • Global: This is a global update impacting all regions and languages.
  • Impact: Google would not tell me what percentage of queries or searches were impacted by this update.
  • Recover: If you were hit by this, Google said you should review its spam policies to ensure they are complying with those.
  • Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to the spam update. It can take many months to recover, Google said.

The spam update page says:

While Google's automated systems to detect search spam are constantly operating, we occasionally make notable improvements to how they work. When we do, we refer to this as a spam update and share when they happen on our list of Google Search ranking updates.

For example, SpamBrain is our AI-based spam-prevention system. From time-to-time, we improve that system to make it better at spotting spam and to help ensure it catches new types of spam.

Sites that see a change after a spam update should review our spam policies to ensure they are complying with those. Sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all. Making changes may help a site improve if our automated systems learn over a period of months that the site complies with our spam policies.

In the case of a link spam update (an update that specifically deals with link spam), making changes might not generate an improvement. This is because when our systems remove the effects spammy links may have, any ranking benefit the links may have previously generated for your site is lost. Any potential ranking benefits generated by those links cannot be regained.

Google Search Ranking Volatility Still Heated

10 Mart 2026 saat 14:51

Google Heated Logo

Yep, more of the same - the Google Search ranking volatility remains heated. Many are asking when we will see an officially announced Google core update. But it has not been announced yet.

We are still seeing daily Google updates, probably smaller core updates that Google doesn't want to comment on.

As a reminder, the February 2026 Google Discover Core Update started on February 5, 2026, and was completed on February 27, 2026.

Previously, we had it heated into March but before that we thought we had some cooling the last week of February - maybe not. We had volatility during the week of February 15th and all of last week, also February 10th and then February 2nd, January 29th onwards and then around January 26th/27th, then January 21st, January 15th, January 12th and January 6th. Prior to that, we had the Google December 2025 core update kick off on December 11, 2025 at around 12:25 pm ET and ended on December 29, 2025 at around 2:05 pm ET. It had two spikes, one on December 13th and the other on December 20th.

Worst ever beginning of a week. There was another big update this weekend - lost about 60% of traffic.

Yes, something happened yesterday, or rather on Saturday: Discover suddenly reappeared, our ranking rose sharply according to Sistrix, and we suddenly outstripped the big news sites in our field. Finally, something to be happy about.

Shop: Sales suddenly started to increase on Friday, Saturday was still weak, but yesterday was a boom and today is also very good. Our ranking has also risen. So something is happening right now, I'm curious to see if it stays that way.

So we got hit very hard. It is now more than 80%, besides the fact that we are ranking even better than before for many terms.

Now I can say - website is dead. Traffic dead totaly, from 200k to 5k per day. Awesome, 10 years is gone.

I feel for you...Around 30 years of daily writing here. You're not alone.

5k per day? wait till it goes to 300 per day. There is still time

Google Search Ranking Volatility Heated Into March

Google Search rankings remain heated into March - I mean, I can post about this every day but now I am at the point of just doing it weekly. Yes, its going at full strength, no slowdown at all.

Whats happening in SERP. Every hour, there is a home page ranking, sometimes a Health Insurance product page ranks, sometimes a blog ranks, sometimes another family health insurance page ranks for the "Health Insurance" Keyword in SERP India. Can someone explain why this is happening?

My guess is the march core is on its way, perhaps?

Experiencing the same for multiple clients. SEMrush sensors are ranging to 9.5 now.

Yes, the update has not been completed yet. Traffic on some websites is decreasing, while on others it's increasing.

I wonder why Google won't confirm any of these ranking changes?

February 2026 Google Discover Core Update Is Done Rolling Out After 3 Weeks

27 Şubat 2026 saat 13:43

Google Core Update

Google's February 2026 Google Discover Core Update has officially completed rolling out after just over 3 weeks. This update started on February 5, 2026, and was completed on February 27, 2026.

Google wrote at 5:02 am ET on Friday, February 27th, "The rollout was complete as of February 27, 2026."

We originally expected this update to finish within two weeks of it rolling out but it took an extra week.

As we originally reported, Google wrote, "This is a broad update to our systems that surface articles in Discover."

Google said this specific update will impact non-US publishers from showing up in the US, clickbait or sensational content and will show more in-depth, original and timely content.

Google wrote, the update will improve Discover as follows:

  • Showing users more locally relevant content from websites based in their country
  • Reducing sensational content and clickbait in Discover
  • Showing more in-depth, original, and timely content from websites with expertise in a given area, based on our systems' understanding of a site's content

Because this update will show users more locally-relevant content from sites based in their country, it may impact the traffic of non-US websites that publish news for a US audience. But at the same time, over time, this update will elevate those websites' content in their locally relevant regions.

As a reminder, Google also updated its Discover documentation related to this update, so check that out.

There is not much data out there on this update outside from the folks over at Newzdash who wrote, "After analyzing the US Top 1000 domains, we get a clearer directional read on the 'based in their country' claim: the international share declines on a normalized, apples-to-apples basis (based on our domain bucketing method)."

I should add, this Discover update should have no impact on the ongoing volatility we have been noticing within the Google Search results.

Google Search Ranking Volatility Beginning To Cool?

22 Şubat 2026 saat 16:40

Google Cold Fire Logo

Some are wondering when the Google Search ranking volatility will begin to cool down a bit. While many of the tools continue to show heated volatility over the past weeks, some are starting to show signs of cooling.

Google has not confirmed a Google search update outside of that February 2026 Google Discover core update, which started on February 5th and is still not officially completed yet. But outside of that, no confirmation on the heated volatility we've been seeing.

Previously we had volatilioty during the week of February 15th and all of last week, also February 10th and then February 2nd, January 29th onwards and then around January 26th/27th, then January 21st, January 15th, January 12th and January 6th. Prior to that, we had the Google December 2025 core update kick off on December 11, 2025 at around 12:25 pm ET and ended on December 29, 2025 at around 2:05 pm ET. It had two spikes, one on December 13th and the other on December 20th.

And as I said before, Google is not commenting on these unconfirmed updates, but we did see some evidence of Google going after self-serving listicles with those previously unconfirmed updates. And Glenn Gabe believes it was beyond listicles and was a Google reviews system, formerly product reviews system, of sorts.

But if you look, there is just a lot of movement with the Google rankings.

Record low traffic, record low revenue. Everything is worse than ever.

Highest non stop volatility I have seen in a decade, constant massive shifts several times a day back and forth. Sites never seen before pumped to top then dropped a few hours later over and over.

Ten hours into my Google day with traffic at 20% ... Cliff edge on a Friday!

I've also noticed fluctuations across local service keywords this month.

Pages with stronger topical depth and clearer content structure seem to be gaining visibility.

Has anyone observed whether entity relevance is playing a bigger role recently?

Only spam and slop is gaining visibility. I don't have any spam or slop sites on my own, so nothing is doing well, but even among my own sites, the less value it provides, the less authority and history it has, the better it is doing.

Google Search Ranking Volatility Remains Heated Through The Weekend

15 Şubat 2026 saat 17:45

On February 10th, we reported the beginning of yet another unconfirmed Google Search ranking update. The volatility has not cooled yet and it seems it may have even heated up through the weekend.

Again, this does not seem related to the February 2026 Google Discover core update, which started on February 5th and is still not officially completed.

SEO Chatter

Here is some of the more recent chatter over the past couple of days from WebmasterWorld and the comments here:

Massive drop tonight -50% and big attack of bots ( >200%).

Okay: RPM is rising, traffic is rising, ranking is rising. My news site is coming back to life. Shop: Yesterday saw more sales than ever before in a single day. It won't last long, but at least there's life in the place again.

11+ hours gone and my global site so far is at 21% of its normal traffic whereas I would expect it to be 50+% ... hmmmm ... UK sites also well down however this can often recover, we'll see.

My french site lost lot of its rankings, with RPM at its lowest in years... I just hope to make it to minimum AdSense payment this month...

I would really like to understand what Google is trying to achieve with its latest update. Spam is on the rise and Discover is going completely crazy. My news site has a little more traffic, but the ranking jumps have gotten even worse. The shop has seen a decline in sales since yesterday.

Other shops are also reporting sharp declines, even though traffic has not fallen but risen.

Looking at Google Analytics is the new horror since the update has started.

Yeah I never seen numbers this low. And this has nothing to do with Discover either.

I'm also seeing some fairly massive drops on my highest traffic pages...I checked and the ranking has been scrambled. It seems that now each request the ranking changes considerably.

I also can confirm ranking issues here too. Though not big, there are still noticeable fluctuations.. So I can kind of see my issues here, but again, its out of my control.. G really do want us dead..

I have a WordPress site that was getting a ton of traffic. That also tanked. I don't think it's 5k now. I gave up on it. It was a big site. Some of you may even know it. Once AI started to hit, it was cooked, and I stopped wasting time.

Well I got Zeroed. From 7m views last April to almost 0 now. Google told me they don't see that much drop. So Google i lying or Adsense and analytics are lying. Worst day past 10 years today...

All the traffic my french site gained in January evaporated in February... lot of shuffling... also AdSense lowest RPM in all these years...

The volatility lately is exhausting. It feels like we're in a constant state of "unconfirmed updates." Hard to stay hopeful when the rankings keep swinging so wildly.

Big shake up in SERPs today. A lot of reddit is seeing a decline. You seeing anything @glenngabe @lilyraynyc @rustybrick

'" SEO Observer (@observeseo) February 15, 2026

Those are just some of the comments - there are so many more.

This volatility is pretty intense and is having a huge impact on many publishers and site owners.

Google Search Ranking Volatility Gets Heated Again February 10th

10 Şubat 2026 saat 16:18

Google Fire Cold Logo

I am seeing some early signs of yet another unconfirmed Google Search ranking update with more volatility touching down today, February 10th. The chatter within the SEO community is starting to spike, and some of the third-party tracking tools are showing volatility.

This seems unrelated to the February 2026 Google Discover core update, which started on February 5th.

Previously we had volatilioty during February 2nd, January 29th onwayrds and then around January 26th/27th, then January 21st, January 15th, January 12th and January 6th. Prior to that, we had the Google December 2025 core update kick off on December 11, 2025 at around 12:25 pm ET and ended on December 29, 2025 at around 2:05 pm ET. It had two spikes, one on December 13th and the other on December 20th.

Sadly, Google is not commenting on these unconfirmed updates, but we did see some evidence of Google going after self-serving listicles with those previously unconfirmed updates. And Glenn Gabe believes it was beyond listicles and was a Google reviews system, formerly product reviews system, of sorts.

SEO Chatter

Let's start with some of the chatter within the SEO industry from WebmasterWorld and here:

Whiplash from all the head-shaking over the nonsense this Google update is causing right now

I had proper Discover traffic again, but general rankings are going up and down. If I didn't know better, I'd say Google's systems are running amok.

Since yesterday traffic is in free fall. User engagement: 0 Zombies: 100% Bots: up again

We're so depressed of the bad traffic (in more ways than one), that we are still in the Jan 2026 instead of a new Feb 26 post.

The downward swings are just so wild that you just loose complete hope in what you are doing. The recalibration or as we used to say in the earlier days Google Dance has started once again.
