Google's John Mueller Calls Some SEO Content - Digital Mulch

29 Aralık 2025 saat 15:51

Google Mulch

Google's John Mueller posted one of his one-liners, where he called some forms of SEO content as "digital mulch." He wrote, "And let's be honest'"most of that SEO content is just digital mulch. (...) If your blog exists solely to rank, it's living on borrowed time."

This came when John posted about a link to an article named Blogging Is Dead. Long Live the Blog. John wrote:

Write like blogging is alive.

"You know the formula. Post length: 1,500+ words. Three internal links. Strategic subheaders. Bonus infographic. (...) And let's be honest'"most of that SEO content is just digital mulch. (...) If your blog exists solely to rank, it's living on borrowed time."

I personally find it a funny line - "digital mulch." And yes, I do enjoy some of John's one-liners.

Microsoft Advertising Adds Custom Columns For Advanced Reporting

29 Aralık 2025 saat 15:41

Advertiser Working Blue Screen

Microsoft has added the ability to add custom columns to the Microsoft Advertising user interface and advertising console. But it doesn't offer every metric, including missing the segment by conversion action metric.

This update was spotted by Jawad Zaheer Khan who posted a screenshot of this on X:

Microsoft Advertising Adds Custom Columns

Jawad Zaheer Khan wrote, "Microsoft finally has added custom columns to the UI but unfortunately the most important 'segment by conversion action' is still missing."

I honestly had no idea if this was new, so I asked Navah Hopkins, the Microsoft Ads Liaison, who replied on Sunday saying, "We've been making ongoing improvements to the modify columns functionality. Taking the feedback back regarding the upgrades you'd like to see."

Google AI Overviews Tests Speaker Play Button In US

29 Aralık 2025 saat 15:31

Google Speaker

Google is testing an option to read aloud the AI Overviews by clicking on a speaker icon at the top of the AI Overview within Google Search. And the crazy thing, this is being tested in the US.

Glenn Gabe, who is based in the United States, spotted this and posted about it on X a couple of weeks ago and he still sees it pop up here and there for AI Overviews.

Here is his screenshot:

Google Ai Overviews Speaker Play Button

We've seen variations of this in the past, in fact, the listen feature for AI Overviews was available in India. But in the US, I don't think we've seen it. We've seen this for featured snippets internationally, people also ask, search snippets, local panels and more.

Glenn posted about it again on Friday, saying he saw it pop up a few times in the past few weeks:

I have now seen the audio icon test in AI Overviews three separate times over the past week or so. Gemini reads the AIO response when it loads (without me having to trigger it). Then you can play it again by tapping the icon. And note, this is NOT the 'Audio Overview' feature'... https://t.co/W955lxsHie pic.twitter.com/cP8X9xbOTL

'" Glenn Gabe (@glenngabe) December 26, 2025

Another twist with the audio icon in AIOs. If you use voice search, you have a greater chance at seeing the audio option (at least based on my testing). That makes sense since you are going to get an audio response so Google is adding the audio icon -- with the ability to pause'... https://t.co/zB20dqsrPG

But again, it is weird it is showing up for folks in the US.

Google Chrome Tests Replacing Gemini Button With Browse With AI Button

29 Aralık 2025 saat 15:21

Chrome

Google is testing swapping out the Gemini button at the top right of the Chrome browser, with a "Browse with AI" button. The button is more colorful and in your face, which probably gets more users to notice it.

This test was spotted by Glenn Gabe who wrote on X, "Interesting to see Google testing different labels and treatment for Gemini in Chrome. The stable version of Chrome says "Gemini" where Chrome Canary says "Browse with AI". When Gemini with Chrome first launched, it was simply the Gemini logo (which many didn't even know was there, they didn't recognize the Gemini logo, etc.)" I do agree.

This is what the normal Gemini button looks like:

Chrome Gemini Button

This is what this Browse with AI button looks like:

Chrome Browse With Ai

And more variations:

It seems Google developers aren't 100% satisfied with the Gemini button's current label in Chrome's tab strip (which is just "Gemini"). They are now testing three additional variations: Ask Gemini, Ask Chrome, and Browse with AI:https://t.co/EBqXrSNnwL pic.twitter.com/xAABFowjWd

A pretty big difference, don't you think?

Google Questions Need For ccTLDs For Some International Websites

29 Aralık 2025 saat 15:11

Google Global

Google's John Mueller questioned the need for all websites to use ccTLDs, different domain names, to take their websites international. He said on Reddit, "you both make things harder on yourself, but you also make it harder for search engines to understand each of these sites."

This was in response to a SaaS company taking its company international. They "went with the strategy of buying up ccTLDs for target countries (think .it, .fr, .co.uk) and translating the page content for each," they said.

John Mueller wrote, "I question whether you really need to split your site across ccTLDs." He went on to say "Having them reserved is one thing, but by separating your site across separate domain names, you both make things harder on yourself, but you also make it harder for search engines to understand each of these sites (because they're all separate sites)."

I mean, the Google international SEO documentation gives numerous options for using a URL structure that makes it easy to geotarget your site, or parts of it, to different regions. They include:

(1) Country-specific domain
(2) Subdomains with gTLD
(3) Subdirectories with gTLD and
(4) URL parameters.

I think this is the first time I saw John Mueller say not necessarily to use ccTLDs for an international set up. And that doing so might make it harder for not just users but also search engines?

ChatGPT Ads May Prioritize Sponsored Content In AI Responses

26 Aralık 2025 saat 15:51

Chatgpt Ads Header

A report from The Information outlined a number of avenues OpenAI is looking at for ad formats in ChatGPT. The main one that is reportedly being thrown around at the AI company is to show sponsored content within the AI responses given by ChatGPT.

The Information wrote that OpenAI's "AI models could prioritize sponsored content to ensure it shows up in ChatGPT responses." ChatGPT could give "sponsored information preferential treatment in responses to users' ChatGPT queries."

"In recent weeks, ad mockups have included displaying sponsored information in a sidebar to the main ChatGPT response window, according to the person who has seen them. Employees have also discussed showing a disclosure saying that the results include sponsored results, said the person familiar with the discussions," it goes on to say.

Another option is to not show the ad or sponsored content immediately but later on in the conversation. The Information wrote, "ads that show up only once a user's conversation has progressed in a certain direction. One ad mockup showed display ads as a secondary step in ChatGPT once a user has expressed interest in finding more information rather than in the initial ChatGPT response, said the person who saw the mockup."

"As ChatGPT becomes more capable and widely used, we're looking at ways to continue offering more intelligence to everyone. As part of this, we're exploring what ads in our product could look like. People have a trusted relationship with ChatGPT, and any approach would be designed to respect that trust," said an OpenAI spokesperson told The Information.

Glenn Gabe wrote on X, "Yep, here come the ads and maybe *new* types of ads? Like giving "preferential treatment" to sponsored parts of the answer? Oof..."

Truth is, we really don't know what ads we might see on ChatGPT. I am not sure sponsored content is the best approach. I guess time will tell.

Google Continues Centering Search Results Test

Google is testing placing the search results in the center of the screen, instead of aligning it more to the left of the screen. This is an ongoing test we have seen on and off over many years and it is still going on.

Google: Pick A Reasonable Site Name To Rank For In Search

26 Aralık 2025 saat 15:21

Google Ranking

Google's John Mueller said on Reddit that when picking a site name, make sure to pick something that you can reasonably expect to rank for. In short, don't go online and complain that your site is named Best SEO blog and you don't rank in the number one position in Google Search for [best SEO blog].

He said this on Reddit, where he wrote, "think about what's reasonable for "your site's name" in terms of search results."

The person on Reddit wrote, "But when I search my site name on Google, it doesn't appear at all."

John Mueller explained that having a generic and competitive name for your site can make it hard for your site to rank for its name. This is not new advice but he wrote:

One thing I've seen folks get confused about is that "searching for your site's name" can be very different depending on what you consider your site's name to be. If your site's name is "Aware_Yak6509 Productions" and if your homepage is indexed, then probably you'll find your site in the search results for that name (what else can a search engine reasonably show?). On the other hand, if your site's name is "best web online .com" then almost certainly just having your homepage indexed is not going to get your pages shown for those searches. The reason is primarily because search engines assume that people doing those searches ("best web online") are not actually looking for your homepage - it's a combination of generic words, not something that uniquely identifies your homepage.

So, when picking a site name, make sure it is something that you can expect to rank for.

Microsoft Advertiser: Exact Match Trumps Ad Rank On AI Surfaces & More

26 Aralık 2025 saat 15:11

Microsoft Ads

Navah Hopkins, the Ads Liaison for Microsoft Advertising, made it crystal clear that exact match is prioritized even over Ad Rank. Navah Hopkins wrote on X and LinkedIn, "Exact match will get the priority if it's there, otherwise Ad Rank determines everything."

Navah Hopkins posted a nice video explaining this and wrote:

If you're running a PMax and Search campaign they might also have overlap. An exact match keyword in a Search campaign will always win over PMax. Beyond that, it goes to Ad Rank.

We do not block exact match from causing an ad to serve in Copilot, it's just that the odds of a conversation exactly matching the exact match keyword are very low. Broad match and PMax have a higher probability of serving.

What is Ad Rank made up of?

  • Your bid amount
  • Ad performance (e.g., click-through rate)
  • Ad relevance
  • Ad extensions
  • Other competing ads

Google's John Mueller Working On Christmas (2025 Edition)

25 Aralık 2025 saat 15:40

John Mueller Google Zurich

Every year, for the past 18 or so years, Google's John Mueller has been working on Christmas to provide support to those who need help with their Google Search ranking and SEO concerns.

This year is no different; John Mueller has responded to several concerns on Reddit and other social media platforms today.

John Mueller specifically has done this since at least 2007, so eighteen years and counting, and has done it again this Christmas.

Here are the previous years of John offering support on Christmas. He did it last year in 2024, and then in 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007.

Here are the threads John responded to over Christmas:

(1) expanding my SaaS using multiple ccTLDs on Reddit John wrote:

Taking a step back, I'd look around for some international SEO guides. There are some great ones out there, and they're a lot more than just local URLs + hreflang. The best time to fix international SEO issues is before they're live, the second best time is, well, you know.

It's a bit late, but I question whether you really need to split your site across ccTLDs. Having them reserved is one thing, but by separating your site across separate domain names, you both make things harder on yourself, but you also make it harder for search engines to understand each of these sites (because they're all separate sites). YMMV of course.

There's nothing wrong with putting them all into the same Search Console account. That's what the site-picker is for.

For x-default, you don't need to create a new generic default version, you can just pick a language that works well for most of your target audience. Maybe that's English, but it doesn't need to be. You don't need a separate x-default site. The more important part is that you make sure the hreflang elements are set correctly, including all back-links, including your important pages individually. (FWIW you can set up hreflang in sitemap files, if that makes it easier to maintain)

(2) Favicon is not visible in the google or any other search engine on Reddit John wrote:

I'd dig up Glenn Gabe's "favi-gone" article - he covers pretty much all of the variations of what can go wrong. Also, since you mention React, I'd make sure your favicon code is in the HTML template directly, and not added with JavaScript (to minimize another possible point of failure -- it's probably fine to use client-side-rendering for favicons, but you'll use them site-wide anyway, so might as well keep it simple).

(3) Google SEO indexing conversion from PHP site to NextJS on Reddit John wrote:

First off - there are a number of guides out there for how to deal with site migrations & SEO - I'd find them all and make plans. IMO the basics are the same across most guides, some of the more obscure things you might be able to skip.

You absolutely need to set up redirects, at least for the important pages as u/weblinkr mentioned. Without setting up redirects, you'll have a mix of old & new URLs in the search results, and the old URLs will drive traffic to your 404 page. It's normal for old URLs to remain indexed for a while, and you'll often struggle to have all links from ourside your website updated, so you really need to make sure they redirect.

If you set up redirects for this, ideally pick permanent server-side redirects (308 or 301) - avoid using JavaScript redirects.

If you're also moving images, and your site gets a lot of traffic from image search, make sure to set up redirects for the images too.

Since a move like this generally also means that at minimum your pages' layouts also change (assuming you can keep the primary content the same -- with updated links of course), keep in mind that page layout changes, as well as site structure changes (the way you deal with internal linking such as in header, sidebars, footer, etc) will have SEO effects. This is not necessarily bad, but all of this basically means you should expect some visible changes in how the site's content is shown in search, definitely short-term (even if you get the URL changes perfect, you will see changes), perhaps even longer-term (and to improve for longer-term changes, let it settle down first).

Finally, having a list of old URLs is great, but especially for a non-trivially sized site (100+ pages? I'm picking a number), you'll want to have something that helps you check & track semi-automatically. I'd use some sort of website crawler before you migrate (to get a clean state from before), and to use the clean state to test all the redirects (which you can do with many crawlers), and check the final state (again using a website crawler). Website crawlers like Screaming Frog are cheap, and well worth it for a site migration, you save so much time & get more peace of mind. Finally, depending on the site's size, it might make sense to keep a static mirror around for debugging for a while.

(4) My Blogger website is not showing on Google even after submitting sitemap '" what am I missing? on Reddit John wrote:

Folks here are mostly focusing on indexing (which, yes, is never guaranteed), but it can also be that some of your pages are technically indexed but just don't show up.

So in short, yes, understand how indexing technically works, because it's the basis for visibility, and understand that some things take time & more evidence to be picked up. But also, think about what's reasonable for "your site's name" in terms of search results.

(5) John replied to an indexing question on Bluesky saying:

The tool hides them in the search results, it doesn't change indexing. Id check if they really appear often in search first (it's not given that others from your site will show instead), but it's fine too use the tool if you just don't want those urls shown anymore.

It is so nice to see John do this every year because for someone to post concerns on Christmas, those people are probably pretty concerned.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Daily Search Forum Recap: December 24, 2025

24 Aralık 2025 saat 18:00

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Google Ads lowers the active visitors lists to 100 for the Search Network and YouTube. Google Ads Advisor is showing up in the Google Ads reporting. Google Ads is working on fixing a bug with dynamic remarketing tracking and data. Bing wrote about how similar and duplicate pages blur signals and weaken SEO for AI and Search. And Bing is testing a more sources section. Finally, Google did not post its annual search result holiday decorations this year.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Google Ads Drops Active Visitors To 100 For Search Network & YouTube
Earlier this year, Google lowered the size of your data segment customer lists to 100 active visitors for the Google Display Network. Now, Google updated that to also be 100 active visitors for the Search Network and YouTube.
  • Confirmed Google Ads Dynamic Remarketing Tracking Reporting Bug
Google has confirmed there is a bug with Google Ads dynamic remarketing tracking where the data is not flowing into the reporting. Adesh, from the Google team, responded that the Google "teams are actively reviewing this and working toward a resolution."
  • Google Search Forgot The Holiday Decorations In 2025
For the past 15 or so years, Google would post holiday-specific decorations at the top of its search results for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Well, this year Google did not. Google did post an Easter egg in the search results, which they do every year, and it posted the season's greeting Doodle, but not the holiday-specific decorations.
  • Bing: Duplicate & Similar Pages Blur Signals & Weaken SEO & AI Visibility
Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan from the Microsoft Bing team posted a useful blog post named Does Duplicate Content Hurt SEO and AI Search Visibility? The short answer is yes, and the long answer is also yes.
  • Google Ads Advisor Suggestions Within Google Ad Reporting
Google is testing pushing advertisers to use Google Ads Advisor from within the Google Ads reporting section. Google Ads suggested questions and prompts at the top of the report, which it thinks you would find helpful to chat with an AI bot about.
  • Bing Search Tests More Sources Section
Microsoft is testing a "more sources" section within the Bing Search results. This seems to load a different user interface, with long card-shaped search results that you can slide through as a carousel.
  • Christmas Tree At Google Bangalore Office
Here is the pretty tall Christmas tree set up in the lobby of the Google office in Bangalore. Merry Christmas to all those who celebrate.

Google Ads Drops Active Visitors To 100 For Search Network & YouTube

24 Aralık 2025 saat 15:51

Google List

Earlier this year, Google lowered the size of your data segment customer lists to 100 active visitors for the Google Display Network. Now, Google updated that to also be 100 active visitors for the Search Network and YouTube.

Google updated it to read:

  • Google Search Network must have a minimum of 100 active visitors or users within the last 30 days. Customer lists also have the same eligibility.
  • YouTube must have a minimum of 100 active visitors or users within the last 30 days. Customer lists also have the same eligibility.

Google Ads Size Data Segment New

Previously it read:

  • Google Search Network must have a minimum of 1,000 active visitors or users within the last 30 days, unless it is a customer list. Customer lists must have a minimum of 100 active visitors or users within the last 30 days.
  • YouTube must have a minimum of 1,000 active visitors or users within the last 30 days, unless it is a customer list. Customer lists must have a minimum of 100 active visitors or users within the last 30 days.

Google Ads Size Data Segment Old

This change was spotted by Dario Zannoni who wrote on LinkedIn and X, "Google drops audience limits to 100 users for all networks and audience types." He added:

Back in May this year, it was found that Google had reduced the minimum number of users required to use Customer Lists in Search campaigns (from 1000 to 100).

Since then, Google has continued gradually lowering these size limits across the different networks and audience types, seemingly aiming to harmonize the requirements and make audience lists easier to use even for smaller accounts.

According to the most recent support pages on "audience segments," the minimum Audience Size Limit has now been reduced to just 100 active users for ALL networks and ALL segment types:
- Across all 3 networks: Display, Search, and YouTube
- Across all segment types, including Remarketing Lists, and Customer Lists

At the same time, the threshold for a segment to appear in Audience Insights has been lowered from 1,000 to 100 users.

The help page (link in the first comment) appears to have been updated very recently. It now also includes more detailed information, including ad policies and troubleshooting tips, so I recommend checking it out if you work with user segments.

Google also added a new section in the blue area at the top that says, "New advertising policies" with a lot more details. Plus Google expanded the "Active users" section and added a section on "Troubleshoot audience size discrepancies and list population."

Confirmed Google Ads Dynamic Remarketing Tracking Reporting Bug

24 Aralık 2025 saat 15:41

Google Ads Report Broken

Google has confirmed there is a bug with Google Ads dynamic remarketing tracking where the data is not flowing into the reporting. Adesh, from the Google team, responded that the Google "teams are actively reviewing this and working toward a resolution."

In many new Google Ads accounts, no data appears in the "ViewStats" section under Data Manager within Google Ads Pixel diagnostics. Specifically, there is no data for "hits with events" and no parameters visible in ViewStats.

Ivelina Ansarova who posted the issue in the Google Ads Help Forums wrote, "We are aware that this topic has been discussed as a case by other advertisers since mid-2025, but without a clear resolution."

He went on to explain when we inspect the implementation:

  • Google Tag Assistant confirms that the Google Ads remarketing tag is firing
  • GTM Preview Mode shows that dynamic parameters (ecomm_prodid, ecomm_pagetype, items, values, etc.) are correctly passed
  • Network inspection confirms requests to googleads.g.doubleclick.net / ccm/collect
  • Cookies are being set and remarketing audiences are being populated

Adesh from Google replied twice to the thread and concluded, "Please be assured that our teams are actively reviewing this and working toward a resolution. We hope this addresses the concern."

If you have this issue, Google is asking advertisers to file a case about this over here.

Google Search Forgot The Holiday Decorations In 2025

24 Aralık 2025 saat 15:38

Google Holiday Logo

For the past 15 or so years, Google would post holiday-specific decorations at the top of its search results for Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Well, this year Google did not.

Google did post an Easter egg in the search results, which they do every year, and it posted the season's greeting Doodle, but not the holiday-specific decorations.

Here is what those looked like on mobile last year.

Christmas:

Hanukkah:

Kwanzaa:

But this year, those decorations at the top of the Google Search results page are not there.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Joyous Kwanzaa to all.

Bing: Duplicate & Similar Pages Blur Signals & Weaken SEO & AI Visibility

Blue Bing Blur

Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan from the Microsoft Bing team posted a useful blog post named Does Duplicate Content Hurt SEO and AI Search Visibility? The short answer is yes, and the long answer is also yes.

I like how Fabrice Canel put it on X, "Similar pages blur signals and weaken SEO and AI visibility." Yep, when you give search engines, like Bing, mixed and confusing signals, it is possible for that to cause issues with traditional and AI search. This is why John Mueller from Google keeps talking about consistency.

That being said, the Bing blog post goes into the AI aspect of all of this. It reads:

  • AI search builds on the same signals that support traditional SEO, but adds additional layers, especially in satisfying intent. Many LLMs rely on data grounded in the Bing index or other search indexes, and they evaluate not only how content is indexed but how clearly each page satisfies the intent behind a query. When several pages repeat the same information, those intent signals become harder for AI systems to interpret, reducing the likelihood that the correct version will be selected or summarized.
  • When multiple pages cover the same topic with similar wording, structure, and metadata, AI systems cannot easily determine which version aligns best with the user's intent. This reduces the chances that your preferred page will be chosen as a grounding source.
  • LLMs group near-duplicate URLs into a single cluster and then choose one page to represent the set. If the differences between pages are minimal, the model may select a version that is outdated or not the one you intended to highlight.
  • Campaign pages, audience segments, and localized versions can satisfy different intents, but only if those differences are meaningful. When variations reuse the same content, models have fewer signals to match each page with a unique user need.
  • AI systems favor fresh, up-to-date content, but duplicates can slow how quickly changes are reflected. When crawlers revisit duplicate or low-value URLs instead of updated pages, new information may take longer to reach the systems that support AI summaries and comparisons. Clearer intent strengthens AI visibility by helping models understand which version to trust and surface.

It is really a good blog post, and goes into tons of details. And I believe this is all relevant for Google Search and Google AI responses as well.

So read the Does Duplicate Content Hurt SEO and AI Search Visibility blog post.

ð Santa may check his list twice, but duplicate web content is one place where less is more. Similar pages blur signals and weaken SEO and AI visibility. Give your site the gift of clarity in our latest Bing Webmaster Blog. https://t.co/TPrOQGywHJ #Bing #SEO #AIsearch pic.twitter.com/EXwx8cSFw0

Update from John Mueller of Google:

Yes! I think it's even more the case nowadays. Mainstream search engines have practice dealing with the weird & wonky web, but there's more than just that, and you shouldn't get lazy just because search engines can figure out many kinds of sites / online presences.

Google Ads Advisor Suggestions Within Google Ad Reporting

24 Aralık 2025 saat 15:21

Google Ad Customer Support Robot

Google is testing pushing advertisers to use Google Ads Advisor from within the Google Ads reporting section. Google Ads suggested questions and prompts at the top of the report, which it thinks you would find helpful to chat with an AI bot about.

This was spotted by Anthony Higman who posted screenshots on X and wrote, "Ads Advisor Pop Up Bubbles Below The Main Graph On Google Ads Campaigns. Because We Could All Use Some More AI Right About Now! I Mean Definitely Me!" It is sarcasm if you can't tell..

Here is his screenshot:

Google Ads Advisor In Ad Reporting

We have seen Google inject Ads Advisor prompts and boxes within ads support pages and policy disapproval notifications in Google Ads.

So I guess here is one more place...

Bing Search Tests More Sources Section

24 Aralık 2025 saat 15:11

Bing Cards

Microsoft is testing a "more sources" section within the Bing Search results. This seems to load a different user interface, with long card-shaped search results that you can slide through as a carousel.

This was spotted by Sachin Patel who posted a number of videos of this in action on X - here is a static screenshot from one of those videos:

Bing More Sources Section

Here is a partial GIF:

It looks like Bing is replacing organic results with more sources and has changed the layout. This is just my observation'"what do you think? @rustybrick pic.twitter.com/2Q4y9LOzi1
